The Archives of the Crown of Bohemia. Facsimile Edition 1158-1526

Archivum Coronae regni Bohemiae. Editio diplomatum phototypica 1158 - 1526.

The Archives of the Crown of Bohemia as the archives of the old Bohemian state, i.e. the sovereign and later the estates, for the period of older Bohemian history is the most significant and the most valuable archival fund in the Czech Republic. At the same time it belongs to the most significant archival collections of its kind in Europe.

The Archives of the Crown of Bohemia contain 2822 written texts, mostly charters and letters from the years 1158 - 1935. Most of these documents are written in Latin language, the first charter written in German language comes from the year 1310, the first written in Czech language then from 1395. The basic part of the Crown Archives contains in particular charters concerning the legal status of the Bohemian sovereign, the position of the Bohemian Kingdom and lands of the Crown of Bohemia in Europe at that time, especially in relation to the Roman Empire. Among these are privileges issued to the Bohemian sovereigns by the Roman kings and emperors, alliances, amity and peace treaties concluded with Roman emperors and kings, French, Hungarian and Polish kings, Austrian archdukes, Bavarian and Saxon dukes. An important group of documents is represented by the Papal bulls and by feudal bonds. In addition to the documents which strengthened the international position of the Bohemian State, the Crown Archives contain charters governing the relations between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the neighbouring countries as well as the mutual relations of these countries. Besides the documents whose recipient was the Bohemian sovereign or the Bohemian State, the integral part of the Crown Archives is formed by the documents which the sovereign obtained by acquiring tenure, and by the written texts concerning the excercise of the sovereign's rights.

With respect to the Archives of the Crown of Bohemia deeply affected in the past, then in the year 1975 the decision on issuing the oldest part of the Crown Archives in phototype facsimile edition was taken.The facsimile edition should covered in seven parts (17 volumes) 1971 mostly charter documents of the Crown Archives from the years 1158 - 1526.

The edition format was chosen so that most of written documents could be reproduced in the original size. The face part of the plate reproduces the overall appearance of the document face with the seal. The revers of the plate reproduces the document reverse (as complete as possible) with the seal in the original size. Exposure was focused on lettering. This fact as well the condition of seals causes thet the reproductions of seals are not as expressive as the reproductions of texts.

The edition arrangement in particular parts is mostly given by historical landmarks, separation to individual volumes is prevalingly mechanical. Every facsimile part is accompanied by the text volume with abstracts in Czech language and in the language of the original as well as by the systém of notes in Latin language. The head abstract makes use of expressions used in original predominantly in "dispositio" only, it does not contain all localities and names and titles of persons mentioned i the reproduced document. The systém of notes mentions the manner of preserving, language, material used for writing, condition, possibly kind of damage, size of material used for writing. The data on seals preserved include the size, colour (except of colour of natural wax), colour of pendants, physical condition which is not always recognizable from the reproduction.

The editions are cited in selection only: basic domestic editions and from foreign editions those having close relation to the publisher, recipient and the area disposed of in the document. The others are cited among the basic editions of the Crown Archives. The literature is presented only exceptionally, if it is relates to the debated date or the contens of the document. Other cases are referred to the basic Koss's work about the history of the Crown Archives and to the latest literature ( Koss, Rudolf / Bauer, Otakar, Archiv koruny České.1.Dějiny archivu České koruny, Praha 1939). Diffeerences in preceding editions and found out losses of second copies of documents deposited in other funds, especially in the Central State Archives fund, are pointed out as well.

The first part (one facsimile volume, one text volume) of the above presented edition was printed in the year 1982 in 250 copies and contains chrters and documents from the years 1158 --1310. Part II (two facsimile volumes, one text volume)contains documents from the years 1311 - 1346 and part III (two facsimile volumes, one text volume) contains documents from the years 1347 - 1355. The fourth part, covering the whole period of reign of Charles IV from imperial coronation until his deaths in 1378, due to a large number of preserved documents was separated into six facsimile volumes and three text volumes. Part IV/1,2 (two facsimile volumes, one text volume) with documents from the years 1355 - 1360 and part IV/3,4 (two facsimile volumes, one text volume) with documents from the years 1361 - 1368 is prepared for distribution. In the present time the print of facsimile volumes of part VII and the text volumes of parts IV/5,6, V/1,2, VI/1,2 and VII/1,2 is prepared.

The work on the edition of documents of the Archives of the Crown of Bohemia was entrusted already in 1978 to the team of co-workes of the Central State Archives in Prague, the publisher until 1990 was the Archives Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Czech Republic. In this year the edition publishing was transferred to the Central Satate Archives.

The significant collection of charters of constitutional law deposited in then Central State Archives in Prague was declared a national cultural monument in 1988, and thuis closed for direct research work. Also for this reason the first parts of the facsimile edition have been accepted positively by the specialized public both at home and abroad. The individual volumes were distributed to libraries of some universities, archives and research institutes especially in Germany and Austria, but also in Canada, Japan, Australia, Finland and Italy. By completing the above mentioned editorial intention the substantial part of the Crown Archives chrters will be opened up for those who are interested in studying and research in the field of subsidiary historical methods and medieval history both at home and abroad.
